Zydeco Shrove Tuesday Rocked!
February 28
This year's Zydeco Mass was not to be missed. Bishop Mathes donned a crazy quilt chasable and beads as our celebrant. Our Dean, Scott Richardson gave the homily. Other clergy and cancel crew danced into church throwing beads to the strains of “Oh When The Saints Come Marching In”. More than 280 happy folk filled the Nave and danced to the music of the Zydeco Patrol band. Canon Lee Teed was a special, joyful presence at the Shrove Tuesday tradition at the cathedral. Lee is credited with starting the popular, joyful Cajun style Eucharist. This year, Dean Richardson said all of the offering was going to the special Katrina offering through the Episcopal Relief and Development fund.
Jane Vander Velde and her Fun Committee transformed the Great Hall into New Orleans West. Jane said, “My grateful thanks to the Fun Committee for all the planning and work involved in the dinner that followed the mass.
She especially singled out Martin Hall for unbelievable decorations, Robert May for transportation, Deedra Hardman for decorating, wine bottle opening, David Smith for bartending and showing off his college skills, Don Pellioni, Norm Crispen and Dru Campbell for their culinary skills on the buffet line, Roger Walsh as comedian ticket taker and Chris Harris for fill-in bartending. And for all the clean up labor. Special thanks go to Tom Wilson for set up and Bob Oslie for raiding the cupboards for extra wine and turning on the lights! Jane Vander Velde, who is leading the Time and Talent Campaign which culminates on Pentecost Sunday said, “We have set the expectations for next year. And, I know that my fun was working with the group. Many thanks. ” Thanks also to Cathedral Administrator Christine Spalding who worked behind the scenes with our staff helping to assure the success of the annual event.
