Warden's Report

Kris HatchThis is my first occasional report as People’s Warden, which will include notes on Chapter meetings and events of interest.

Each month, the chapter hears an occasional report from one major entity of the Cathedral. A report on Saint Paul’s Senior Homes was presented in February. The facility was created in the 1960’s by the parish to ensure safe and comfortable retirement for the widows of St. Paul’s. Funds were raised and a HUD grant received that began this outstanding organization. Currently, seniors enjoy independent and assisted living, as well as nursing care. The first Episcopal chaplain, Lee Jacobs, now cares for resident and staff spiritual needs. Future plans include a PACE program funded by state and federal grants that will include one stop health care where doctors, nurses, nutritionists, therapists and transportation providers work together to meet the many needs of our seniors. This program would give clients far better care for less money. Because of the stellar leadership and vision of this organization, these plans may become a reality for many seniors in San Diego.

Last Saturday, our Hiking Group trekked Hellhole Canyon Preserve, which is located in the center of the Paradise fire area of three years ago. I was struck by the Coastal Live Oaks that stand scorched and black against the blue sky. As we move into Lent we reflect on our sinful selves and death represented in those trees. Three years later, those majestic oaks continue to stand and, miraculously, begin to burst with new spring-green leaves against their black trunks and branches. A wonderful way to begin our Lenten journey.

Afterwards, the hikers had lunch together where I lost my cell phone. After searching for a couple of days, I received a phone message with a number to call to retrieve it. The message at that number (which I called 3 times to make sure it was the right one) was, "No one gets to the Father but by me." Whoa! Here was my big chance to speak to Jesus, and after dialing that number three times, all I could say in a meek voice was, "Hi… I’m calling about the lost cell phone!"
