Rank Retires as Clarion Editor - Greer is Named
Meet Jim Greer, New eClarion Editor
By Canon Andrew Rank
Dear Friends,
It is with great pleasure that I present Mr. James Greer, your new editor of the cathedral eClarion, who takes over this ministry with this March 2007 issue. Jim is well versed with cathedral activities, having just completed a term as member of Chapter and Dean’s Warden, as well as experience on various committees having to do with cathedral finances. Jim is a longtime Episcopalian who spent much of his life in New York City, where he was in real estate and served many ministries in the various parish churches where he was a member before moving to San Diego.
Last summer, Jim paid his own way to be an observer at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Columbus, Ohio. He wrote a convention wrap-up article for the summer eClarion and attended our recent diocesan convention to present you with a report on the convention’s activities.
On a personal note, it has been a joy for me to serve as chair of the communications department and edit the Clarion newsletter first for two years in print form and since last January as an online publication. During this time we also played a role in creating an online weekly bulletin edited by Ann Gary. With the leadership of Susan Rust of Green Bird Media and Joan Ford, my predecessor in communications, our team created a new logo for St. Paul’s as “the Cathedral for the City,” the brand you see on all our publications and the special coffee cups we give to newcomers every Sunday. I also helped design and edit the Welcome booklet given to newcomers and the first section of the cathedral Photo Directory published several years ago. I will step down as Canon for Communications on March 11, 2007. The Communications Department is part of Membership and Development, and Chris Harris, director of Membership and Development, will take on the general supervision of communications at St. Paul’s. He has some exciting ideas and will take communications to a new height with his vision. My special thanks to Susan Rust and Rick Wagner of Green Bird Media who produce the eClarion, eBulletin and the cathedral website for their dedicated ministry and creative genius, which has provided us with one of the most attractive websites and newsletters in the Episcopal Church.
Communications is a team ministry which includes the fine photographs taken by Jim Langston, the efforts of Canon Joan Ford who is our liaison with the local television stations and newspapers. Ann Gary does a splendid ministry as proof reader and prepares the weekly eBulletins. Phil Darby and Torrey Modic create the Sunday service booklets and announcements. They also prepare emergency eBulletins to alert our members of previously unscheduled events.
Thank you one and all.
The Rev. Canon Andrew Rank
By Susan Rust
Andrew Rank is a remarkable human being; part scholar, part pastor, part author and fully an inspiration to those who know him. He is deeply rooted with of the Society of St. Paul which began July 1, 1958 in Gresham, Oregon. It was the first men's monastic order to gain recognition under the national canons of the Episcopal Church in 1959. This year he will write a fifty-year chronology, of the Society and of his affiliation with them.
In June 1, 2001 we were all blessed when the office of The Society of St. Paul moved to the campus of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Their subterranean offices for those of you who haven't traipsed down to see them, are affectionately called the catacombs. From their little fortress, Andrew and Barnabus do a staggering amount of volunteer ministry in support of the Cathedral and diocesan programs. In addition to pastoral care and liturgical ministry, they serve as elected diocesan representatives on the Cathedral Chapter as well as board members of St. Paul’s Senior Homes and Services. Both are on the Campus Redevelopment Committee of the St. Paul’s Senior Homes. They are also on the Dorcas House Ministries Committee. They have been a member of the Conference of Anglican Religious Orders in the Americas since 1970. Canon Barnabas Hunt is a board member of the Uptown Faith Community Services. Andrew is the outgoing Canon for Communications for the Cathedral.
What I have learned most from Andrew the last two years is not the constant good works, the passion and compassion, the unending generosity in sponsoring many, many ministries but his daily kindness of word and spirit. Andrew can be counted upon to be gentle and pastoral, mindful and thoughtful – even and perhaps especially in trying times.
All things change and I firmly believe change is positive, however Andrew's turn at the Communications wheel at the Cathedral has left us all more nurtured and cared for by his leadership. We have accomplished a tremendous amount with ease, patience, humor and grace, he is the very model of a modern Reverend Canon.
