Dia de Los Muertos: A Celebración of Life

On Thursday, November 2nd, Saint Paul’s Cathedral will observe and celebrate “The Day of the Dead”.
The festival Eucharist will be led by our Canon for Hispanic Ministry Mary Moreno Richardson and the Dean.
Dia de Los Muetros is one of the most colorful and moving spiritual traditions of the Americas.
It originated with the Aztecs three thousand years ago and was incorporated into Christian worship beginning 500 years ago.
The festival was transferred to All Souls Day by the Roman Catholic Church. Thanks to our Hispanic Congregation at St. Paul’s and others who find this worship service touching their hearts, we will offer one of the most unique evenings of prayer and witness. Attendance has increased each year we’ve celebrated “The Day of the Dead”
In this bi-lingual service, we link our concern for loving pastoral care with our passion for multi-cultural worship. On this night, we will recall, speak of, and pray for our dear departed. We’ll also create an altar of rich color, beautiful flowers, personal pictures, holy candles, and playful statuary. All of this is intended to remind us to hold death lightly and look beyond the grave to the joy of heaven.
The renowned writer Octavio Paz observes that Mexicans are generally undaunted by death and have no qualms about getting up close and personal with it. In fact, he suggests that the culture “chases after it, mocks it, courts it, hugs it, sleeps with it; it is his favorite plaything and his most lasting love.”
The service begins in the cathedral at 7:00pm. Please bring photographs of your departed loved ones and invite your friends; we welcome the entire community.

El Jueves 2 de Noviembre, la Catedral de San Pablo observará y celebrará "El Día de Los Muertos".
El festival Eucarístico va a ser conducido por nuestra Canóniga para el Ministerio Hispano Mary Moreno Richardson y el Decano.
Día de Los Muertos es una de las tradiciones espirituales más conmovedoras y de mucho colorido de las Américas.
Su origen data de miles de años atras con los Aztecas y fue incorporado inicialmente a la adoración Cristiana hace 500 años.
El festival fue trasferido o adoptado como El día de las ánimas por la Iglesia Católica Romana. Gracias a la congregación Hispana en la Catedral de San Pablo y a otros que encuentran que este servicio de adoración toca sus corazones, la Catedral ofrecerá y será testiga de una incomparable noche de oración. La asistencia a la celebración de “El Día de Los Muertos”ha ido en aumento cada año.
Con este servicio bilingue, unimos nuestro interés por el esmerado cuidado pastoral con nuestra pasión por la adoracion multicultural. Durante esta noche de celebración, recordaremos, hablaremos y oraremos por nuestros seres querido que ya partieron. También crearemos un altar rico en colores, bellas flores, fotos personales,
velas benditas y estatuaria interactiva. El objetivo de celebrar la muerte de esta forma es para recordarnos de mantener la realidad de la muerte como algo no malo; ver la tumba mas alla de lo fisico, como el medio para llegar a gozar del cielo.
El renombrado escritor Octavio Paz señala que los mejicanos por lo general aceptan la muerte y no tienen ningún problema abordando el tema y personalizandolo. De hecho, el sugiere que la cultura "la persigue, la ridiculiza, la cuestiona, la acoge, duerme con ella; es su cosa favorita de juego y su mas duradero amor."
El servicio comenzará a las 7:00 PM en la Catedral. Por favor traiga fotografías de sus seres queridos que ya partieron e invite a sus amigos. Le damos la bienvenida a toda la comunidad.
