How we practice

A Rule of Life: Worship, Prayer, Learning, Service, Giving
The friends and members of St. Paul’s Cathedral are invited to embrace a rule of life in five parts, not only as an expression of their religious commitment but also as a means of growing spiritually.

Worship Weekly
“In… worship, we join with others to acknowledge the holiness of God, to hear God’s Word, to offer prayer, and to celebrate the sacraments.”

Cathedral worship centers around the celebration of the Eucharist, also called Holy Communion. All are invited to participate both as worshipers and in specialized roles such as choristers and liturgical assistants (for example, acolytes or ushers). In addition, the worship life of the Cathedral is marked by Daily Prayer, Morning and Evening, which is generally led by lay officiants.

Pray Daily
“Prayer is responding to God, by thought and by deeds, with or without words”.

The Cathedral offers various group prayer programs, including Centering Prayer and the experience of the Labyrinth on the floor of the Great Hall, modeled on the original labyrinth in France’s Chartres Cathedral.

Learn Constantly
“As a people baptized, we seek to continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship.”

In addition to Sunday Forums devoted to important issues of Christian life, the Cathedral supports a church library, St. Paul’s archives, a docent program facilitating access to the church during daytime hours, and other learning initiatives for adults, children, newcomers, and members.

Serve Joyfully
“In living out our Baptismal Covenant, we seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves.”

There is a wide range of administrative and programmatic ministries, all of which welcome the support and involvement of members of St. Paul’s community. These include service on the Cathedral chapter, the Health Cabinet, the Newcomers and the Peace and Justice committees, Integrity (the national organization of gay and lesbian Episcopalians), the Center for the Performing and Visual Arts, and many others. You may obtain a complete list of these activities from the Cathedral office.

Give Generously
“It is in giving that we receive.”

St. Paul’s Cathedral exists because of the generosity of generations. It solicits support to meet the needs of people who come here for solace, understanding, and peace; to present special programs, services, and other opportunities for prayer, learning, and reflection; and to maintain the Cathedral campus. We depend entirely on the gifts of members and friends who share our vision and want to be a part of the Cathedral’s ministry. Opportunities to give include current giving through Sunday offerings and annual pledges, as well as deferred and planned giving, for example through trusts, bequests, and gifts of appreciated stock.
