Learn Constantly – Christian Formation

Mission Statement:

“As a people baptized, we seek to continue
in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship.”

"St. Paul's Cathedral will provide a comprehensive, coordinated, and engaging Christian Education program which emphasizes ongoing spiritual development and service to others in Christ's name."

In addition to Sunday Forums devoted to important issues of Christian life, the Cathedral supports a church library, St. Paul’s archives, a docent program facilitating access to the church during daytime hours, and other learning initiatives for adults, children, newcomers, and members.

Sunday Forums
In addition to cathedral clergy and laity, the weekly forum features many exciting speakers from other churches and schools. Discussion topics range widely from current events to timeless theological issues.
Meets on Sundays at 9:15AM
Contact The Rev. Canon Allisyn Thomas (619) 298-7261 x333 or ThomasA@stpaulcathedral.org.

Bible Study – Two classes, meets Sundays at 9:00 AM
Bible study is held every week and is open to all. Two Bible studies are held each Sunday at 9:00am. The first is the longstanding in-depth examination of the books of the Bible. The second class discusses the scripture readings appointed for each Sunday over the three-year cycle from the Lectionary lead by the Rev. Jack Lindquist. Contact Dr. Stewart Dadmun (619) 298-9670 or sedadmun@att.net

Education for Ministry (EFM)
Every baptized person is called to ministry; the program, developed by The School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee), provides education to carry out the ministry. It is a four year program (9 months per year) in which participants study the entire sweep of Christian tradition –scripture, history and theology-from the earliest period to the present. Cost is $350 for the first year.
Meets Thursdays from 6:00 to 9:00PM in the Fireside Room.
Contact Cecil Keener at (858)569-4085 or cmcguir1@san.rr.com or Steve Velez-Confer at (619) 645-6344 or sconfer@aol.com.

The group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 7:00-8:30pm. Meetings include prayer, reflection, and presentations. Spiritual Journeys Covenant Group
Exploring and sharing our journeys with one another is an important spiritual practice for people committed to life-long formation. To assist with this process, we have created an adult education class that will give us the chance to listen to other members of the congregation, the staff and ourselves as we explore and honor our spiritual histories. Members of the staff speak about their unique journeys of faith; small groups are formed, and, led by staff members. Over the course of a month, each member of the group will have the chance to offer their unique and particular stories to the other participants. Offered in the fall on Sunday evenings.

Via Media
Via Media represents a renewed commitment to evangelism in the Episcopal Church. The Church needs to spread the message of an inclusive, powerful, passionate God to all people. Our churches have experienced a tension between “traditional” and “progressive” ideals. An evangelism tool that presents the basic tenets of Christianity from an inclusive, Anglican approach to scripture, traditions, and reason, leads the participants to a broader view of the journey of faith and the role that the Church can play in society. Via Media represents an inherently Anglican program that represents the mainstream of American Anglicanism and will help grow the Episcopal Church.

Godly Play for Children Over Four
Beginning September 12, we have a program for telling the children “stories of God”. The volunteer teachers tell Scripture stories, the nature of our Liturgical Year and pray with them.

Cathedral Teens
The youth group participates in Bible study, group discussions on topics of interest, service projects (such as food boxes for families), and recreational activities and meals. Retreats are often jointly sponsored with teens from All Souls Episcopal Church, Point Loma.
Meets on the second and fourth Sundays at 5:45PM and on the first and third Sundays at 10:30AM. Contact Eric Burtson at 619-544-9336 or Burston@cox.net.

Nursery
The nursery is open on Sundays for infants through age four.
