Peace and Justice Committee

“All life is interrelated. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality; tied in a single garment of destiny.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Peace and Justice Committee is charged with extending the mission of the Cathedral into the world and to inspire the people of the cathedral to embrace our suffering brothers and sisters, who are the face of Christ in the world. We seek the joy of the completeness of God's love in hope of a just and peaceful world for all people.

Please contact Marian Gaston at (619) 656-4634 or mariangaston@yahoo.com for more information.

Alternative Gifts Expo

Thanks to all who supported the alternative gifts expo! The expo sells a variety of products and artisan crafts from around the world, as well as life-sustaining services that can be donated in the name of a child or other loved one. As a result of the success of this year’s expo, we were able to make an extra donation through ERD to provide a micro-credit for honey production.

If you missed the expo, there are other opportunities to get support international development and trade:

Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is the international relief and development agency of the Episcopal Church of the United States. An independent 501(c)(3) organization, ERD saves lives and builds hope in communities around the world. They provide emergency assistance in times of crisis and rebuild after disasters (Asian tsunami, hurricane Katrina). Long-term solutions in the areas of food security and health care, including HIV/AIDS and malaria, enable people to climb out of poverty.

For more information visit http://www.er-d.org/

Bishops Blend Coffees are marketed for ERD who receives 15% of the profits from sales. Bishops Blends are Fair Trade, organic, shade-grown coffees. The small farm growers – both men and women - of the beans are enabled to support their families, provide education and health care for them, and to be guided in farming and business practices by the coops to which they belong. They must use ecologically friendly, non-toxic farming methods to protect their health and that of the environment.

Fair Trade is a concept that reaches beyond coffee to sugar, tea, chocolate, rice, fruit, and even to artisan crafts. By providing a fair price to producers it begins to extend some of our abundance to our global brothers and sisters so that they too may be self-sufficient. When we buy Fair Trade products we live out our faith, participating in God’s call to justice for God’s people, building up creation and helping heal a broken and alienated world.

For more information visit http://www.fairtradefederation.org/

St. Paul’s Cathedral is committed to serving Bishops Blend Coffee, making Fair Trade coffees, teas, and chocolates available for individual purchase (usually after services the first and third Sundays of the month).

Advocacy for Immigrants

St. Paul’s continues to be a voice for the fair and dignified treatment of those who come to the United States to share our dream of hope and prosperity. These activities include adopting a resolution asserting our Christian principles for humane and sensible immigration form, our participation in the New Sanctuary Movement and the continued dialog between St. Paul’s clergy and laity and public officials on this issue.
