Questions and Answers about the Fire
Updated: 12/18/06
Q: What happened?
On Sunday, December 17th, during the 10:30 service, a fire was discovered burning in the Women’s Vesting Room in the undercroft of the Cathedral (directly below the Sacristy). Dean Richardson announced the need to evacuate and worshippers filed out of the Cathedral in an orderly fashion.
The fire department responded quickly and put out the fire before it was able to spread beyond the vesting area.
Q: What was the cause of the fire?
Authorities are pursuing the case as an arson investigation. The fire appears to have been deliberately set and a possible suspect was seen leaving the area of the fire just prior to the fire’s discovery.
Q: Was anyone injured?
Thankfully, no. The fire was discovered quickly and parishioners evacuated the building in a calm and orderly manner. No reports of injuries.
Q: What was the damage?
The women’s vesting room and bathroom were severely burned and/or destroyed. See pictures here. Initial estimates are in the $100,000 range.
Q: Have the police caught the perpetrator?
No, although the investigation is ongoing. This site will be updated if there are any developments.
Q: Will this affect future services or any other Cathedral operations?
The Cathedral is up and running and all Advent and Christmas services and functions will continue as planned.
Q: What can I do to help?
First pray for the Church, its staff and volunteers who are working hard to keep the Cathedral on track during the Christmas season. And, as our Dean reminds us, for the tormented individual who would do such a thing.
Secondly, consider helping financially with a gift to our Buildings and Grounds Fund. There are always ancillary, uninsured costs when an event like this happens, as well as the inevitable delay. In addition, new, unbudgeted expenses are anticipated, including possible security enhancements.
Gifts to our Buildings & Grounds Fund will help pay for such expenses. You can make an online gift by clicking here or mail your check to the Cathedral notating “Buildings & Grounds Fund.”
